Rainwater Harvesting
The process of collecting rainwater from the rooftops and other surfaces for reuse in not-potable applications has been used for generations (e.g. the traditional barrel sitting under the downpipe in the backyard). In recent times the benefits of rainwater harvesting have become more relevant, with the rising costs of treating water to potable standard and the impending water charges and introduction of water metering.
Rainwater harvesting is the process of collecting the rain water that would otherwise have gone down the drainage system into the ground or been lost to the atmosphere through evaporation.
The beauty of the system is that all houses and business premises already have in-built collection devices (roof, gutters, downpipes), delivering the water to ground level, where the leaves and debris can be filtered.
The water can then be stored in underground or overground tanks and delivered to where it is needed - either directly to each appliance or tap; or indirectly by storing it in an attic header tank.
This water can then be recycled and used, as required, for household and garden uses such as:
· Toilet Flushing
· Washing Machines
· Garden Irrigation
· Washing Cars
Typical systems will automatically switch to the mains water supply, if the rainwater storage tank starts to run empty.
