Easy Ways of Saving Energy and Money!

Lights:

* Turn off lights in rooms that are not in use

* Replace traditional light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) bulbs; they use less electricity and last longer

Hot Water:

Use a timer on your immersion and take a shower rather than a bath

Heating hot water can account for over 50% of energy consumption in the home

Use a lagging jacket on your hot water cylinder.  This will keep the water hotter for longer and pay for itself in about 3 months.

Television/Computers:

Activate the energy saving mode on the computer; switch off the screen when it is not in use

Avoid leaving the television in standby mode, it can use up to 50% of the energy it uses when switched on

Washing Machine / Dishwasher:

Use full loads for a more energy efficient use of both appliances

The lowest temperature possible should be used when washing clothes

Use the economy cycle on the dishwasher whenever possible

Kettle/Toaster:

When using the kettle, only boil as much water as is required (but make sure the heating elements of electric kettles are covered!)

The toaster is more energy efficient than the grill for toasting bread

Central Heating:

Turn off the heating overnight and when you are out during the day

By turning down the thermostat by 1oC to 20oC, the annual space heating bill can be reduced by up to 10%

General:

When purchasing appliances (e.g. fridge, washing machine, dishwasher etc) where possible purchase ‘A' rated appliances. They are more energy efficient and save the environment.

Ensuring that you have your attic well insulated is another key way to save on your home energy bill
